Campsite security is a problem for all festivals these days. We're going to have increased 24-hour CCTV this year with night vision plus uniformed and plain-clothed security patrols throughout the hours of darkness. The 24-hour phone number for the Security Cabin will also be prominently displayed throughout the site. No site can be 100% secure but with these and other measures we're putting in place we hope to deter thieves or swiftly detain them if they still turn-up at our festival. The best advice though is always to keep your valuables as safe as you can. For years we had no thefts at all at Wickham and we'd like to return to that situation if we can. We're proud of our record as one of the safest and friendliest festivals around and will do everything we can to deter thieves.

Hi Guys,
just back for a browse.
went to a trade fair in feb., and was given some samples of a new product called 'itz. for your bits', I am not selling these so please do not think that is the case.
I gave one to my daughter to use at glaston and iow, she says they are great, very comfortable, made of neoprene, she managed to fit in two mobile phones, 1 purse, 1 wallet and a couple of cards (+ some girlie bits that I wont go into), so if anyone is interested for personal possessions I expect you can buy them on line.

I agree! We're going to keep the layout the same as last year but with some extra security measures to try and prevent thefts from tents – a problem that's of concern to every festival in the land. Our site is safer than most and we wish to keep it that way.

I don't think it'd work changing the fields around coz all the caravans, campers etc would find it more difficult getting up the slope if bad weather! Security number a great idea though! Just make sure you've got your valuables with u! Also lock up a yreat idea as I know u don't want to walk around with a rucksack on!

Yes! We'll be giving all campers a phone number for 24-hour security this year. We're also increasing overnight security patrols on the campsite and providing 24-hour CCTV for added security. Ours is one of the safest festivals in the UK – we've never had a problem with thefts from tents until one night last year – but just about every festival suffered from tent thefts in 2010 and we're working closely with the police to make our site as safe and secure as it possibly can be in 2011.

Hi,
we camped by the Mill Lane fence last year and were awoken by three guys crawling under the fence in the wee small hours. One asked "What is this?" and the reply was "It's the Wickaham Festival." I jumped out of my sleeping bag and unzipped the tent, but by the time I was outside they had disappeared into the campsite. It was probably the same scumbags who were in someone's tent in the middle of the night.
Please could you supply a central security number so that the campers can call if they see anything untoward?

Thanks for the ideas. We'll certainly be looking to have a lock-up facility next year and extra overnight security patrols on the campsite to back-up the 24-hour CCTV which will also be extended to ensure there are no 'blind spots'. Intelligence suggests that the gangs who rob from tents are not opportunists who come over or under the perimeter fence. They are well-organised and actually buy Festival tickets themselves, pitch tents, get wristbands and blend in with the crowd. We are sharing intelligence with other Festival organisers on how best to combat this threat next year.

Cost permitting, extra security personnel, a scaffold watch tower, and a fence alarm, could all act as deterrents. Hampshire Police could set up some honey trap tents and appropriate signage (this has proven to be effective at Glastonbury according to some reports, with some thieves having even been caught). A couple of extra police patrols on the surrounding roads at night might help deter gangs who are on their way to burgle a site. Many festivals also provide a lockup facility for valuables.
These are just a few ideas…

Hi,
Another really great festival – thanks to everyone for all their hard work.
I heard about the tent thefts – such a huge shame.
I have a suggestion though.
I used to be a regulr at the Cambridge Folk Fest' until Radio 2 took over as the major sponsor.
One of the reason I stopped goign was because of the festival camping secuirty next to the main festival sight.
Back in the day, you got a different coloured wrist band to denote you were a camper and access to the camping area was strictly monitored. Not correctly coloured wrist band, no entry to that area.
Them they decided to let everyman and his do access that area to use the loo's – PRESTO, you got tent thefts occurring.
How about, for Wickham, if the organisers are going to insist on access to the site through the field being used by the campers, they swap the parking and camping fields round.
Campers on the field at the top of the road where access can be monitored and parking on the field where we were all camped this year.
OR, better still, give campers different coloured wrist bands and put in high fences along the thoroughfare with security staff posted on the breaks in the fence to ensure that only people with the correct wrist bands are allowed access to the camping area.
Just a thought!
